Age Calculator

Last updated: June 2026 · Reviewed by editorial team

Use this age calculator to find your exact age in years, months, days, hours and minutes from your date of birth — or to compute the precise difference between any two dates. The calculator handles leap years correctly, accounts for the Gregorian calendar's irregular month lengths, and works for any date from the past or future.

This age calculator from date of birth is useful for filling government forms (passport, PAN, Aadhaar, driving license), checking eligibility cutoffs (school admission, voting age, retirement, NPS, senior citizen benefits), planning life events, or simply settling family debates about whose birthday is sooner. Enter the dates and get an instant breakdown — no signup or download required.

How this calculator works

How age is computed

The calculator computes the difference between two dates in three nested units — years, months, and remaining days — using the standard Gregorian calendar logic. Starting from the date of birth (or the earlier of the two dates), it counts:

  1. Whole years until just before exceeding the target date
  2. Whole months from that point until just before exceeding the target date
  3. Remaining days as the residual

This is the same algorithm used by passport offices, school admission systems, and most government documents in India. It matches the everyday human notion of age: "I am 32 years, 4 months and 12 days old."

Leap year handling

The Gregorian calendar adds February 29 every 4 years, with two exceptions: (a) century years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years, unless (b) they're also divisible by 400. So 1900 and 2100 are not leap years, but 2000 was. The calculator correctly handles these rules. People born on February 29 — about 1 in 1,460 of the population — get an exact birthday only every 4 years.

The "completed age" vs "running age" question

For most legal and administrative purposes in India, age is measured by completed years. So a person born on January 5, 2000 is "23 years old" until January 4, 2024 — they don't turn 24 until January 5, 2024, even though they're in their 24th year of life from January 6, 2023. This calculator follows the completed-years convention, which is what every Indian government form expects.

Common age-related cutoffs in India

MilestoneAge Threshold
School admission (Class 1)5 or 6 years (state-dependent)
Driving licence (LMV)18 years
Voting age18 years
Marriage (women / men)18 / 21 years

NPS subscription18 to 70 years
Senior citizen tax benefits60 years
Super senior citizen tax benefits80 years

Government employee retirement60 years (most central services)
Senior citizen FD rates / FD TDS limit (₹1L)60 years
Pension under EPS-9558 years

Age computation between any two dates

The calculator works for any pair of dates, not just date-of-birth to today. Use it to compute:

  • Project duration: "We started this build on 12 March 2024 — how long has it been today?"
  • Service tenure: "I joined the company on 3 August 2017 — am I past 7 years for ESOP vesting?"
  • Loan tenure check: "My loan started on 1 May 2020, ends 30 April 2030 — how much is left?"
  • Anniversary planning: "Our wedding was 24 November 2018 — how many days till the next anniversary?"

Why "30 days = 1 month" approximations are wrong

Many simple calculators online use a 30-day month — which gives a wrong answer for any non-trivial date span. February has 28 (or 29) days; July, August have 31; April has 30. A 90-day span starting January 1 reaches April 1 (a 3-month, 0-day gap), not "3 months" of equal length. This calculator computes calendar-month boundaries exactly, matching how passport, Aadhaar, school and tax authorities calculate age.

Worked example

Example 1 — Born March 15, 1990; today is April 26, 2026:

  • From 1990-03-15 to 2025-03-15: exactly 35 complete years
  • From 2025-03-15 to 2026-03-15: 36 years complete on 15 March 2026
  • From 2026-03-15 to 2026-04-15: 1 month complete
  • From 2026-04-15 to 2026-04-26: 11 days
  • Age: 36 years, 1 month, 11 days

Example 2 — Born February 29, 2000; age on April 26, 2026:

  • 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400). 2024 was the last leap year — birthday on Feb 29, 2024.
  • From 2024-02-29 to 2026-02-29 — but 2026 is NOT a leap year. By convention, the birthday rolls to March 1 in non-leap years.
  • From 2026-03-01 to 2026-04-26: 1 month, 25 days after the rolled birthday
  • Age: 26 years, 1 month, 25 days (computed against rolled birthday Mar 1, 2026)

Example 3 — Service tenure: joined 3 August 2017, today 26 April 2026:

  • From 2017-08-03 to 2025-08-03: 8 complete years
  • From 2025-08-03 to 2026-04-03: 8 months
  • From 2026-04-03 to 2026-04-26: 23 days
  • Tenure: 8 years, 8 months, 23 days
  • For gratuity (5-year minimum, 6-month rounding): 9 years counted (since residual is over 6 months)
